about

The early weeks of 2006 was a reunion of sorts for the band QMRplus and a short but prolific period. After months spent spread around the country, the band reconvened in Chicago to record at The Ice Factory for the better part of several days. These sessions produced the Uhzoid EP, as well as many hours of as-yet unreleased material, and culminated in a Midwest tour including shows in Chicago, Cincinnati and Lexington’s The Dame on Main, where this recording was made.

Originally released as a single, uncut 1.5-hour track burned as a digital MP3 onto the Uhzoid EP CD-R, Live at The Dame showcases QMRplus in their true element - shifting between long-form improvisations and original compositions live in front of an audience. Opening with 30+ minutes of celestial groove-explorations, the band demonstrates its ability to spin rhythmic epics that build and shift on a dime. After a solo bass interlude by Golombisky, they enter a blistering rendition of “Uhzoid” followed by the epic, slow-building "Light Slant" and a version of Golombisky’s “On Mom’s Birthday”. The heavy "Collisions with Heavenly Bodies" that follows is a 7-minute doom mantra that eventually fragments and melts itself down into the abstract cassette atmospheres of "Floating in Stereo" and the meditative resolution of "Remembrance of an Imagined Moment".

The final track of this album was included as a secret track found at the end of the original release - a showcase of ambient remixing created by Boudreaux from sampled sections of the band’s Ice Factory studio recordings and found hidden within the DNA of the Uhzoid EP release a year later.

[ It is worthwhile to note that at several of the Chicago shows of this late January/early February 2006 tour, QMRplus was joined by friend, percussionist and electronic artist Anthony Cuccia, and it was after a post-gig incident he had with the Chicago Police Department that the idea for the ears&eyes Festival, and subsequently ears&eyes Records, was formed. ]

This digital reissue of Live at The Dame - nearly 14 years since its original release - is the third of several QMRplus reissues coming monthly from ears&eyes Records, coinciding with Bandcamp Fridays throughout the rest of 2020.

about

QMRplus New Orleans, Louisiana

Formed in 2003, QMRplus was the quartet of Quin Kirchner, Matthew Golombisky, Robin Boudreaux & Matthew McClimon. While all members wrote for the group, their main focus was on free improvisation, 'spontaneous composition' & creating music in the moment. Working extensively in pre-Katrina New Orleans, shows became creative journeys, with improvised grooves blending in and out of composed material. ... more
