about

In January of 2006, coming off a devastating year following the destruction of their home town, New Orleans, and the fallout and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the members of QMRplus decided to reconvene in Chicago to record the studio album they had yet to make. Finding a supportive community and creative inspiration inside the multidisciplinary art space and DIY venue known as the Ice Factory (founded and operated by some of Kirchner's friends from Oak Park, IL), the band set up shop and proceeded to record hours of original compositions and free-form explorations over the course of several days.

Sadly, much of this music was never released, but a small part of those sessions did make it out into the world in the form of Uhzoid EP.

Originally self-released as a hand-screened digipak CD-R containing a single 42 minute track, Uhzoid EP is an exploratory journey through sound bookended by the Kirchner/Golombisky original for which the album is named. Split into 13 tracks for this reissue, the group takes the listener through ambient soundscapes, live sampled vibraphone, distant piano & cassette tape manipulations along with some of the hard-hitting punk jazz they were known for.

Also burned onto the disc was a digital-only MP3 of an uncut live performance at the Dame on Main in Lexington, KY from February 1, 2006 (not included here).

On February 21, 2007, QMRplus celebrated this release with a performance at Chicago's Hideout Inn as part of the Umbrella Music's long-running Immediate Sound series. James Falzone's group, Klang (feat. Jason Adasiewicz, Jason Roebke, Tim Daisy) opened the night. Original copies of the CD-R (and insert) are out of print and rare.

This digital reissue of Uhzoid EP - nearly 14 years since the original release came to be - is the second of several QMRplus reissues coming monthly from ears&eyes Records, coinciding with Bandcamp Fridays throughout the rest of 2020.

about

QMRplus New Orleans, Louisiana

Formed in 2003, QMRplus was the quartet of Quin Kirchner, Matthew Golombisky, Robin Boudreaux & Matthew McClimon. While all members wrote for the group, their main focus was on free improvisation, 'spontaneous composition' & creating music in the moment. Working extensively in pre-Katrina New Orleans, shows became creative journeys, with improvised grooves blending in and out of composed material. ... more
